Open Golf Championship promises cash bonanza for Wirral

WIRRAL and the Northwest can expect an economic bonanza of around £100m when the Open Golf Championship returns to Hoylake in two years time, according to R&A studies.

Golf’s governing body based their forecast on an independent exercise carried out by researchers at the Sport Industry Centre at Sheffield Hallam University into the likely economic benefits to the regional economy delivered by this year’s Open at Royal Lytham and St Anne’s on the Lancashire coast.

A Royal and Ancient spokesman said that the predicted £90m economic boost from this summer’s open golf championship could well be exceeded when the event is staged in Wirral in 2014.

He said: “It is reasonable to speculate that with spectator numbers traditionally higher at Royal Liverpool, the total economic benefit to the region will be greater in 2014.”

The headline figure for Royal Lytham includes a forecast economic impact of £35.1 million and a destination marketing benefit of £52.6 million gained through global television exposure of the week-long event (15-22 July 2012).

Researchers at Sheffield Hallam University base their economic impact forecast on 185,000 spectators admissions and the established spending pattern of players, the media, event staff, sponsors and organisers measured over the last two championships.

Commenting on the research findings R&A Executive Director – Championships, Johnnie Cole-Hamilton said: “The Open Championship comes to England’s Golf Coast to provide the best players in the world with a true test of golf and it is good to know that we also bring an important financial boost to the host economy.”

Welcoming The Open Golf Championship economic impact forecast Fylde Borough Council Chief Executive, Allan Oldfield said: “Having The Open Championship in town is clearly beneficial to local people and businesses in Fylde and we look forward to welcoming the many thousands of spectators destined to attend this years event”.

Lancashire County Council Chief Executive, Phil Halsall said that hosting the event could make a real difference to the economic outlook of the region.

Companies in the North West are demonstrating their enthusiasm to do business at The Open accounting for 30 percent of official hospitality sales to date. Overall official hospitality sales are a third up on last year at this time with some packages already sold out.

Royal Liverpool Golf Club

The Royal Liverpool, also known as Hoylake, is the second oldest seaside links golf course in England.
Built on a racecourse in 1869, the famous course has played host to some of golf’s most historical moments, including holding the inaugural men’s amateur championship in 1885, the first international match in 1902 between Scotland and England and in 1921, the first international match between Great Britain and the United States, later known as the Walker Cup.

Between 1897 and 2006, Hoylake has hosted the men’s Open Championship 11 thrilling times, including the 1930 famous victory of Bobby Jones who went on to win a grand slam that year.

More recently, after a gap of nearly 40 years, the Open Championship returned to Hoylake in 2006 with Tiger Woods triumphing during a week of unusually benign weather.

Ominously the club’s website highlights Bernard Darwin’s famous quote: “Hoylake, blown upon by mighty winds, breeder of mighty champions” and there is no doubt that the course will test the strategic strengths for which the world’s best women are so renowned.

During his 2006 victory, where for once the winds did not blow, Tiger Woods’ respect for the penal bunkers was such that he struck his driver only once during the tournament.

Simple Approaches to Spin the Golf Ball to Fade and Draw

If you were to ask almost any golfer “the way to spin a ball”, they’d of course suppose you were discussing backspin. Understanding the way to impart enough Backspin on a Ball will minimally manipulate your golf ball as it lands on the green, and when you are extremely talented at it it is possible to make the ball reverse its direction and come back to you. That skill could turn out to be useful with a tight pin placement, as you will be able to get the golf ball closer even as your golf shot will have more margin for error.

However more often we might visualize spin to form the ball for the route we want it to travel. This of course came in handy for Bubba Watson at the 2012 Masters, when on the sudden death hole he had to hit the ball out of trees, then abruptly hook it so it had a possible opportunity to get to the green. As we know he made a remarkable golf shot under pressure, putting it to the green and winning the event on the hole.

Lacking the ability for shaping the ball left-to-right (Watson is left-handed) and hook it just the right amount, he likely would’ve lost the tournament on the hole. The reason why he and any golfer can form the ball in any path is, naturally, the ability to spin the golf ball. And much like putting backspin to a golf ball, it mostly involves technique and practice. However whenever we observe our ball hook or slice out of bounds, we’ve either put too much spin on the golf ball or spun it too much by accident. Then we have to figure on how to Fix a Golf Slice.

A handful of golfers can hit the ball a decent distance and hit it absolutely straight with consisency, but very few. With the majority of golfers the normal swing is likely to be slightly inside-out, producing a draw, or outside-in, producing a fade. If you are attempting to get too precise and try striking the ball straight, nearly all of the time you will not accomplish perfection and it will shape, or spin come what may. One of your greatest disconcerting things that can transpire to a golfer is not knowing which direction the ball will spin. This provides him small margin for error when lining the shot up.

So on the driving range; decide if you want your golf ball to draw or to fade. Then proceed through the following checklist:

1. Grip. Provided you want to spin the ball to create a draw, use a powerful grip to help maintain the clubface somewhat closed through impact.
2. Alignment of the feet. To generate a draw of the ball, shut the stance a little. This would maintain a swing pathway that goes from inside the golf ball to outside through impact.
3. Shoulder location. For creating a draw, keep the lead shoulder from opening, while keeping the clubface moving through the golf ball longer through impact.

Obviously, to create spin that will cause the ball to fade, do the complete opposite of the above. Shaping your ball left or right simply means spinning it clockwise or counterclockwise and only a small amount of spin will be required to successfully shape the ball right or left.
